Girl Group takes no prisoners in their new single, ‘Rage Song’.
After a busy summer which saw the release of their debut EP, ‘Think They’re Looking, Let’s Perform’, and their first-ever Reading Festival performance, the Liverpool-based five-piece, Girl Group, continue to gain momentum with the release of their new single, ‘Rage Song’.
Consisting of five female artists with very different sounds, Girl Group’s songs unapologetically and seamlessly genre-mix – drawing inspiration from pop, R&B, dance music and more. For ‘Rage Song’, they aptly lean into more of a punk sound for the first time, with the inclusion of loud drums, distorted guitars and screams. However, this track still keeps Girl Group’s trademark with its varied vocals – Lil’s rage-filled words are contrasted by the softer vocals in the chorus and ethereal harmonies.
Taking no prisoners, the lyrics are witty and flippant – ‘I know boys will be boys, but you’re a fully grown man’. They combine their individual female experiences into a 3-minute, undeniably catchy rant which most women could relate to – ‘no I wasn’t flirting, I’m just nice!’
Being a feminist band built on a shared frustration at the male-dominated music industry, ‘Rage Song’ is their strongest song yet, addressing fluently – and bluntly – the struggle that they are most impassioned about, and the thing that united them to begin with.
