Hakaisu explores emotional distance on expansive new single ‘Space Between Us’.

Hakaisu has never been one to stay in one lane. Since his early days in the lofi hip-hop scene, the El Salvador and Italy-rooted artist has been steadily evolving his sound—pushing beyond the boundaries of the genre that first put him on the map. Tracks like “Mellow Skies” and “Unfolding” captured the essence of classic lofi, but more recent releases like “Holding Out” and “Connection” have seen him blend ambient, electronic and experimental textures to create something altogether more expansive.

His latest release, “Space Between Us,” marks a pivotal moment in that journey. Featuring vocals from UK-based artist ebony, the track takes on the theme of distance—both physical separation and emotional disconnect—within the context of a strained relationship. It’s a delicate yet powerful reflection on what it feels like when someone you love begins to feel unfamiliar.

Production-wise, Hakaisu leans into that emotional weight with reverb-drenched melodies and echoing percussion patterns that feel like sonic representations of space and silence. It’s music that doesn’t just tell you how it feels—it immerses you in it. The atmosphere is thick with longing, and every layer of sound seems to echo across the divide the song speaks to.

Drawing inspiration from artists like Nujabes, Hakaisu brings a deeply introspective edge to his work—fusing cultural influence and emotional resonance in a way that feels timeless. “Space Between Us” is proof that lofi can evolve beyond its “study beats” label into something far more cinematic and soul-stirring. With this release, Hakaisu doesn’t just push the genre forward—he redefines what it can be.
