girlsweetvoiced soundtracks sad girl summer with latest track, ‘Tonight.’

Originally from Ottawa, bedroom pop artist girlsweetvoiced is still largely unknown in the public eye, but that ambiguity has become central to her appeal.

The latest single from girlsweetvoiced, ‘tonight,’ is a dreamy addition to her growing discography. The track is anchored by a sample of Joni Mitchell’s ‘California,’ built around its instantly recognisable dulcimer line. Rather than reframing the original in a dramatic way, girlsweetvoiced opts for subtlety. The sample is left largely untouched, looping gently beneath the track and lending it a sense of warmth and familiarity without ever overwhelming her own voice. The fact that Mitchell personally cleared the sample speaks for itself, but I’d actually argue that “tonight” doesn’t rely on that legacy, instead coexisting with it.

Vocally, girlsweetvoiced remains consistent in her approach – soft, breathy and remarkably clear. Her voice sits neatly within the mix, never competing with the clean production. The overall effect is immersive but unforced. There are inevitable comparisons to PinkPantheress in both structure and strategy with brief runtimes, sparse arrangements and a measured release cadence that prioritises intrigue over saturation. But where PinkPantheress draws heavily from UK dance lineage, girlsweetvoiced leans toward stillness.

This sense of restraint extends beyond the audio. Her visual presentation remains deliberately minimal, using close-up framing and fragments of lyrics to establish an artistic identity built on simplicity. Over the past year, she has steadily built a following through TikTok and Tumblr, with tracks like ‘my most saddest song’ and ‘u & me’ gaining traction despite their brevity, alongside recent acoustic releases ‘spearmint’ and ‘slowbird.’ With ‘tonight,’ girlsweetvoiced doesn’t expand her sound so much as refine it. The track reflects her minimalistic sound, suggesting an artist more interested in atmosphere than scale.

In a landscape that often rewards immediacy and excess, girlsweetvoiced’s music feels refreshingly sensitive and this sentimental track is a definite must-add to your spring/summer playlist.
